Jacqueline
r Kennedy Onassis, known in the 1960s as Jackie Kennedy, and later as Jackie
Onassis, was the wife of President John F. Kennedy, and First Lady of the United
States from 1961 to 1963. From the time of John F. Kennedy's election to the
U.S. presidency in 1960, through his assassination in 1963, and for the rest
of her life, Jackie's name and image were symbolic of social grace and elegance,
beauty, glamour and fashion sense. In January 1994, she was diagnosed with lymphoma,
a form of cancer. Her diagnosis was announced to the public in February. The
family was initially optimistic and Jacqueline stopped smoking at her daughter
Caroline's insistance. Jacqueline continued her work with Doubleday, but curtailed
her schedule greatly. By April 1994, Mrs. Onassis knew the end was near as she
had a bout with the spreading of her cancer. She made her last trip home from
Cornell hospital on May 18, 1994. A large crowd of wellwishers, tourists and
reporters gathered on the street outside her penthouse apartment at 1040 Fifth
Avenue, and she died in her sleep at on Friday, May 19, of that year. Onassis
was only 64 when she passed away after a brief battle with the cancer. As a concession
to a grieving world, audio of her private funeral was broadcast around the world
on May 23rd. She was buried beside her assassinated husband at the Arlington
National Cemetery. A year after her death, New York City dedicated a high school
called Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School for International Careers, in
Jackie's honor. It is the only high school in the United States named in her
honor. In addition to this school, the Central Park's main reservoir was renamed
in her honor, so it is called the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir
